Refutation: Jihad: What’s all the Fuss About? Ahmadiyya

Another allegation is that, despite the text of the Holy Qur’an and example of the Holy Prophet clearly indicating that the Jihad of the sword is a legitimate cause of action for a Muslim, Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (‘alayhi al-salam) forbade the physical Jihad. How can Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (‘alayhi al-salam) be a true Muslim when he contradicts the Qur’an and Sunnah?

Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (‘alayhi al-salam) has stated:

”There is no compulsion in Islam. There are only three types of wars in Islam:

(1) Those undertaken in self defense.
(2) Those undertaken as chastisement for aggression.
(3) Those undertaken for the establishment of freedom of conscience, that is to say for breaking up the strength of those who inflicted death upon such as accepted Islam.

As Islam does not permit the use of force or coercion for the purpose of its propagation, it is altogether vain and absurd to wait for a bloody Mahdi or a bloody Messiah; for it is not possible that anyone should appear who should convert people to Islam by the sword contrary to the clear teaching of the Quran” (Jesus in India, p. 10).

From this statement, it is clear that Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (‘alayhi al-salam) fully accepted the physical Jihad as a legitimate means of defence available to Muslims. There is no difference of opinion in this matter. The issue, therefore, is not the legitimacy of physical Jihad, something Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (‘alayhi al-salam) has clearly agreed with here; but, the role of the Messiah and the necessary steps needed to be taken in order to address the difficulties of the Muslims of this age. Hadrat Mirza Ghulam Ahmad (‘alayhi al-salam) emphasised that in this age man has become overcome by his greatest enemy, namely, his own ego and nafs. And so, solving the problems of the Muslims in this particular age is not to be found at the point of a sword but instead through spiritual enlightenment. The is further evident from the hadith:

”By Him in Whose Hands is my life, you will not enter Paradise unless you believe, and you will not truly believe unless you love one another. Shall I tell you something whereby you will love one another? Multiply the greeting of peace among yourselves.”

In short, what good would all the weapons in the world be for a community which is fragmented, disunited and distrustful of one another? What good can be found in the sword which a Muslim points towards a non-Muslim aggressor while his Muslim brother is stabbing him in the back?

The Holy Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam) fought others primarily as a reaction to an act of aggression, and using an army of brothers who shared an unbreakable strength of taqwa (righteousness) and bond of brotherhood. Can anyone today point towards a Muslim community which is wholly united under the leadership of one righteous man and based on the precepts of righteousness?

The following words uttered by of the Holy Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam), on his return from the battle of Tabuk, stand as a living reminder of the duty and need of the Muslim community that developed after the passing of the Prophet (sall Allahu ‘alayhi wa sallam):

‘We are returning from the lesser Jihad (fighting) to the greater Jihad (struggle against ones’ self).”

This is the teaching of he (‘alayhi al-salam) who claims to be the awaited al-Imam al-Mahdi. One can either adopt this teaching or stick to the path taken by the modern day Islamic ‘freedom fighters’ who, for the most, only seem to have succeeded in causing the loss of Muslim lives and destruction of Muslim lands. How can any person hope to reform other foreign nations when they have clearly failed in reforming themselves? Surely, Allah the almighty has warned mankind: ”…and cast not yourselves into ruin with your own hands…”  (Q.2:196)

Finally, for those that feel the Ahmadi Muslims are gutless and have no will to defend Islam, let them look towards the Ahmadi ”Furqan Force” which sacrificed the sons of Ahmadiyya in the defence of Kashmir. Let them also know that no less than a Caliph of this blessed Jama’at sent his own sons to fight and gladly risk their lives in that noble pursuit. Then let them understand that until they have exhausted all avenues of peace, they cannot hope to find a legitimate physical Jihad. If this was not so, then what value would there be in the Salam of Islam!

    Great article, jazakaAllah for raising some pertinent points.

    I had a question with regards to understanding the historic events that took place in the early days of Islam. I wanted to understand a few events better including when Hadrat Khaled Ibn Alwaleed (ra) led his army to invade Persia and Iraq, was this invasion based on Khalifatul Masih (v)’s third point “(3) Those undertaken for the establishment of freedom of conscience, that is to say for breaking up the strength of those who inflicted death upon such as accepted Islam.” or was this in self-defence?

  2. REMEMBER, ISLAM CANNOT BE FORCED INTO ONE’S HEART. RELIGION AND GOD CAN’T BUT SHOVED INTO ONE’S MIND. it’s common sense. I mean to distinguish a true devoid vs someone who’s forced to follow religion.

    I think you missed the point, I can argue and argue but I’m getting tired of explain over and over. the Mehdi has a different jihad, it was of Pen and Paper (Knowlege). You should know Islam wasn’t spread by the Sword, But sword was used at the time of Prophet Muhammad as a mean to defense. Islam itself was under attack. and the enemy was using the sword, only then sword was permitted as a mean of defense. I’m sure pen and paper at that time wasn’t really an option.

    The Promised messiah revived the Islam, not back stabbed it. But more to the point, Jihad now is fought through knowledge and hearts (internal) rather than AK-47 (external). The teaching the promised Messiah brought forth are not against Islam but rather to show the world the true beautiful teaching of the Prophet Muhammad saw. Anyone who thinks that Jihad should be fought physically, Well, good luck. You might scar, destroy and ruin families lives. I’m sure if that was to happen to you, you wouldn’t be smiley and spreading hate. just my 2 cents, something to think about.

  3. Agreed. They always say we do not believe in jihad but thats not true. Always better to change hearts.
